The 2.5% reality check
Only 10.2% of American high school field hockey players go on to play in college.
Just 2.5% make it to Division I.
That's not meant to discourage you.
But it should wake you up to what you're up against if you want to get recruited to - and earn playing time at - the highest collegiate level.
The Competition Reality
Let's look at Shooting Star Thanksgiving, one of the biggest field hockey college recruiting showcases, which takes place in Virginia every November.
Most participants (and college coaches, to be frank) are too caught up in their own ambitions and logistics at this event to take in the sheer scale of it:
- 240 teams
- 3,000 athletes
- 16 games per hour from 8am to 10pm
Almost every player at an event like this has the same dream.
If you stopped and asked any player at that event which college division they're hoping to play in, you'd get the same answer 95% of the time: Division I.
But here's what most don't realize: those 3,000 athletes? They're just one part of your competition.
The Full Picture
College coaches are evaluating talent from multiple pools:
- American high school players (that's you)
- International recruits (who've often played longer, on better surfaces)
- Transfer portal entries (with proven college experience)
- Their current roster (who won't give up playing time easily)
That 2.5% just got more complicated, didn't it?
One Thing That Works
Here's what the most successful recruits understand: those other pools of talent? You can't control them.
What you can control is how you stack up against your biggest competition: yesterday's version of yourself.
Your Action Step This Week
Before your next practice, write down one specific thing you'll do to separate yourself from yesterday's version of you.
Not a vague goal. Not a distant dream. One concrete action that makes you a better field hockey player today.
Remind yourself to work on it every time you pick up a stick for the next month, and see how much better you get.
Reality Check
The 2.5% isn't just a statistic. It's a choice.
You can either be intimidated by these numbers, or you can run towards them with everything you've got.
Your biggest competition isn't in those other talent pools. It's in the mirror.
Next month, I'll launch my complete system to stand out from the crowd.
The Field Hockey Recruit Playbook breaks down exactly how college coaches evaluate talent from each source, and contains my comprehensive framework for positioning yourself effectively against every type of competition.
P.S. Next week, I'll reveal how to stop wasting money on the wrong events.
