Where to go from here?

June 15 was a couple of days ago.

And the dust is starting to settle.

Some of you are drowning in coach conversations. Others have a couple of promising leads. A few are still staring at silent phones, wondering when their moment will come.

Here's the thing: whatever your situation right now doesn't define your final outcome.

But what you do next? That matters.

The Three Types of Post-June 15 Recruits

After years of watching this process unfold, I've noticed most players fall into one of three camps inside the first week:

The Overwhelmed

You've got more interest than you can handle. Your phone won't stop buzzing. It feels like winning the lottery, but now you're paralyzed by choice.

The Evaluator

You've got several solid conversations happening. Nothing feels guaranteed, but you're in the game. The challenge? Figuring out which horses to back.

The Optimizer

You have some traction, but your gut says there's more out there. You're not panicking, but you're not settling either.

Each type needs a completely different strategy.

If You're Overwhelmed

Having too many options is a great problem to have. But it's still a problem.

Because every minute you spend on a program you'll never choose is a minute stolen from weighing up programs that could be your future home.

Here's your brutal reality check:

You need to cut programs loose. Soon.

I know it feels harsh. What if you're making a mistake? What if your top choice doesn't work out?

But here's what I've learned: the kindest thing you can do for everyone (including yourself) is to be decisive.

When you tell a coach, "Thank you for everything, but this isn't the right fit for me and I plan to pursue other options," you're not burning bridges. You're showing maturity.

Plus, you're freeing up their time to find someone who genuinely wants to be there.

If You're Evaluating

Your mission is intelligence gathering.

Most players make the mistake of treating every conversation like a first date. They're trying to impress instead of investigate.

Flip the script.

This is your chance to become a detective:

  • Hit up ESPN+ and watch one of their games (not just highlights)
  • DM some current team members for a behind-the-scenes viewpoint
  • Ask coaches something they won't have prepared. On Sunday, someone asked me "What's a change you've made in your program in the last two years that has benefited it?" - one of the better ones I've heard!
  • Watch how quickly coaches respond to your messages

The programs that are right for you will welcome this scrutiny.

The ones that don't? Well, that tells you something too.

If You're Optimizing

You might not have wanted to be in this position.

Perhaps you hoped you'd have more interest generally - or maybe you do, but it's not from the schools you like.

There's still time for that interest to arrive in the next few weeks, but you can't control that.

So if you want more options, your next moves matter.

  • Get to camps at schools that haven't noticed you yet
  • Double down on programs showing lukewarm interest
  • Get fresh video that shows your development

A word of warning, though: don't start chasing ghosts.

Here's the brutal truth: the programs that have already contacted you are telling you something about your level.

Finding a few more schools in that same tier of competitive level provides your target list for summer camps and clinics.

Don't waste your summer (and your parents' money) trying to go after programs that are too far above your level. That's not optimizing. That's fantasizing.

While others chase impossible dreams, you can build real relationships with realistic options.

That's how you actually optimize.

Reality Check

The players who succeed from here aren't just the ones who got the most calls last week.

They're the ones who stay focused on what they actually want.

While everyone else gets caught up in the noise, you can get clear on the signal.

Inside the war room: Part 3
In parts one and two of this series, I've explored what gets players on coaches' radars and how those lists evolve over the two years leading up to June 15. Now comes the crucial question: How do coaches decide who actually gets contacted, and when? The answer isn't uniform. Different programs approach June 15 with completely different philosophies based on their resources, reputation, and rec...
Your last-minute June 15 checklist
June 15 is less than a week away. If you're a rising junior, this is the day college coaches can finally contact you directly. Some players will see their phones light up with emails at midnight. Others will get calls throughout the day. Some might not hear from their top choices immediately. Regardless of which camp you fall into, being prepared matters. The Contact Reality Every program goes...
Inside the war room: Part 2
In part one, I explored the three-circle framework that gets players on coaches' radars: talent, interest, and athleticism. Today, we're going deeper into the methodology behind how coaches build and refine their June 15 contact lists over the two years leading up to that crucial date. The Methodology Behind the Madness Some coaches systemize their recruiting to an incredibly nerdy level (guil...
